He is charged with three sex crimes and 34-year-old Jacob Hoggard, frontman of the rock band Hedley, arrested on Monday is scheduled to appear in a courtroom in Toronto on Thursday. The Criminal Code states that sexual interference involves sexual contact, directly or indirectly, of a person under the age of 16 with a part of the body or an object.
The police claim that the crimes occurred on three dates in 2016, after a man met two women on separate occasions. The Toronto police did not provide any further comments on the case or the allegations. Hoggard’s lawyer refused to comment in an email.
“Apart from the statements I can make in court, I do not plan to make public comments on this subject,” wrote Ian Smith.
In a press release, the police said that most likely there will be other complainants.
Hoggard, originally from Vancouver, has previously denied ever being involved in non-consenting sexual behavior, but said he acted in such a way as to objectify women.
The Vancouver-based band played its last show before an “indefinite pause” in Kelowna, BC, on March 24th.
The two-time winner of the Juno was abandoned by her management team, included in a black list of dozens of radio stations and abandoned by musicians booked as a trailblazer.
In view of the Kelowna show, fans distributed flyers to support the band.
The online allegations began to surface at the beginning of the year suggesting inappropriate meetings with young fans.
A 25-year-old fan of the Ottawa band, allegedly sent to CBC in February, was sexually assaulted after talking to Hoggard at the Tinder dating app and agreeing to meet him at a hotel in Toronto.
The CBC published another report a few weeks later a Toronto woman who claimed that Hoggard had tried to force her to do things without her consent during a sexual encounter in 2016.
Announcing that he would suspend his career in February, Hoggard said he would make real changes in his life, would seek advice from his family and learn from the “extraordinary women of my life”.
“The way I treated women was reckless and disdainful of their feelings.I understand the significant harm that is caused not only to women with whom I interacted, but to all women who are degraded by this type of behavior,” written in a statement published on his Twitter account on February 28th.
“I was negligent and indifferent and I have no excuse, which is why I’m really sorry.”
Hedley withdrew from consideration for the Juno Awards earlier this year in Vancouver and withdrew from running the telecast.
